      「 song · C H A N D E L I E R 」— violin arrangement by Bryson Andres
The original song by Sia spoke of her personal struggles with alcoholism and unhappiness. Through this song, he could understand what his own mother is going through.

The lullaby enables Spear to shift his own center of gravity towards other surfaces besides the ground—such as walls and ceilings. Through this he could walk, run, jump and fight on almost any surface. If used strategically, he can attack using his swords in creative angles.

He can't project his lullaby past a 10 meter radius if his feet aren’t in contact with any surface, thus he couldn’t “freefall” into the sky or jump from one far wall/ceiling to another; gravity reverts back to normal if he “falls” past the limit. If not careful, he can hurt himself with a bad fall. His lullaby also doesn’t affect the gravity of others.

Spear usually gets disoriented (even motion sick) from this as it reminds him of the feeling of getting badly drunk or hangover.

      「 friendly · attentive · lax · playful · temperamental 」
Spear is a good-humored individual who is fond of being around other people, thus he likes hanging out with friends and performing on stage. He gets easily bored when alone unless he is composing or recording songs with his violin. He is very caring especially to kids and girls as he had wanted to have a younger sibling follow after him. Growing up as an only child, he could only make up by being a brother figure to others.

Although engaging in conversations, he rarely talks about his personal life. Many—even his own close friends—mistake him to be a problem-free guy when in truth he prefers choosing distractions over dealing with complications. Despite his aversion with problems, he would always lend an ear or hand to those in need. Though his patience could be arguably comparable to that of a saint’s, people will forget how nice he is when he gets provoked badly.

    ▷ H I S T O R Y

      「 introduction 」
A small boy of seven found himself briefly separated from his parents. His voice calling out to his parents—who were also searching for him—couldn’t be heard, drowned by the jibber jabber of the thick crowd around him.

From inner clamor came quietude. A dark yet sweet sounding voice then penetrated over the noise of the streets—it was a voice which didn’t need words to elicit many, many emotions from those who hear it. The young boy was easily mesmerized by the voice of a violin. It was then that he wanted to become a musician just like that old man he met that one spring afternoon.

      「 exposition 」
Spear was born to a young couple and was raised in Allegro all his life. They weren’t excessively wealthy but life was simple and happy that way. The three of them lived in a moderately large apartment in Adagio. He was lucky to have loving and supporting parents as he was given an acoustic violin of his own upon returning from their vacation in Europe. Unfortunately that was the last family vacation they would ever have together.

Two years into his violin lessons, he had come to notice that his parents no longer came in pair when attending his recitals. And whenever he was home, they would argue every night. The only way he could block out the noise was to play his violin.

After another two years, he found a new full-size violin on the table and a note greeting him “Happy Birthday”. Realizing it was from his father, he immediately ran to his parents’ room to thank him…only to find his mother crying alone.

It wasn’t the first time he saw her cry—though her tight embrace told him that they will be having only each other from then on.

      「 development 」
Spear continued his violin lessons when he reached high school and even joined the music club. Being naturally outgoing, it wasn’t difficult for him to gain many friends and blend in even with the “cool kids”. Through this, he found comfort in their company.

It was only when he was 13 that his mother explained to him that she and his father were divorced, and that his father had left for a different country. Reasons were never said but one fateful phone call hinted him why. When his father had finally decided to stay in touch with him, he overheard three different voices: a woman’s, a baby’s, and a young girl who seemed to be about his own age. Despite this, he never inquired about them from his father. As though all resentment washed away, he was just happy to hear his voice again.

What came with his father’s monthly calls was an allowance which the 14-year old would find rather excessive. Knowing well that his mother was finding it difficult to keep up with their expenses on her own, he carefully spent whatever he had for their groceries and left enough for other necessities.

Despite things seemingly turning better for them both, he still saw the sadness in his mother’s eyes. Her smile couldn’t hide her hurt—she still loves his father.

      「 false recapitulation 」
To ease their expenses, they both moved to a smaller apartment downtown after he graduated a loyalist of La Folia. Upon turning 18, Spear started to work part-time in a fast-food restaurant near their home so he could continually afford his tuition in Allegro University. Instead of taking up a degree in music production, he took business administration—much to the surprise of many of his friends back in high school.

One of the few benefits of a single university in such a small island was the certainty of ending up in the same school with friends who have no plans of going abroad; that very fact was what kept the smiles on Spear’s face. Despite his career choice, he still played with his violin. Eventually, his friends formed an amateur band and took him as a violinist in place of a vocalist. With his violin worn out and lacking the modernity the band wanted to achieve, all his friends pitched in and got him an electric violin.

Unfortunately what came with these changes is his mother’s struggle with recurrent depression. Her answer to this: alcohol.

Ever since becoming friends with some other middle-aged women at her new workplace, his mother started going to bars after work. Despite being in her late thirties, his mother still looked young and attracted all sorts of “friends”. Being in a party every night made her feel happy; for her it was as though she was reliving her lost youth…though her happy hours end with a hangover at home.

With the worsening behavior recurring night after night, their home no longer had music which accentuated against the cries and screaming. Spear had his mother treated after a year of tolerance. Having to pay for medication and therapies besides their regular expenses, all their savings—monthly allowance, salary, and the pocket money from his music—bled dry in such a short amount of time. Reaching wit’s end, Spear turned to the only person who could help them.

      「 recapitulation 」
A reunion overdue for eight years—his father came back to make amendments. Spear had mixed feelings upon seeing him after so long; far different from the first time he heard his voice over the phone. Enmity threatened to take over as the thought occurred, all of this was his fault. But once he felt that firm yet caring embrace, he just cried in silence.

His father didn’t stay long in the island; merely he just came to help readily with all the bills, arrange for the mother’s continuous treatment, and to catch up with his own son. Despite all of that, the man knew it wouldn’t take away his guilt.

A few months came to pass since then and things have been considerably better. Spear made sure his mother meets with her therapist and peer support group, not detour to a bar after work, and finds any trace of alcohol in their home. With his father helping with most of the expenses, Spear felt that the money he gets as a part-timer and a freelance musician would be more than sufficient in the long run. He decided to discontinue his business course—a half-ass resolve which he thought was beneficial back then—and one day do what he had originally planned: take music production.

      「 coda 」
One weekend, Spear woke up to find a card in his hand which had one question on it.

「 IS THIS THE END? 」

Flipping it, he saw a picture of himself. Dead and sprawled on the floor of a familiar bar. Head bleeding and a broken whisky bottle next to him. Thinking it was some asshole’s idea of a good joke, he circled one of the choices below it.

      No.

Throwing the card into the bin, he forgot all about it as he got ready for another gig, taking his violin with him.

    「 trivia 」

    • His first name was a result of his father’s “ingenious” idea. The mom never really approved of this.
    • Despite his distaste for alcohol, he couldn’t help but swig a couple of bottles once in a while since he’s the “happy” kind of drunk.
    • During his free time, he usually performs on the streets in one of the islands of Celesta to get some loaded tips. Gotta love them tourists.
    • Having a trained and sensitive ear, he can compose and make violin arrangements of other songs even if he heard it only once, and even play on the spot.
    • Though not competitive and overly proud, he is confident with his skills with the violin—whether acoustic or electric. Although he uses an electric violin more over the acoustic because of all the special quirks that comes with it, especially the “looping” feature.
    • He respectively named his violins: “Little Granny” (1/2 size acoustic), “Pennyroyal” (4/4 size acoustic), and “Peppermint” (electric).
    • He picked up some parkour skills since the gigs (such as concerts) his friends attend to aren’t always legal. You gotta know when and how to run.
    • He treats his equipment like his babies; every dent and scratch they get makes him depressed. The amplifier is the most battered one.
